Orienteering Central Coast
DESCRIPTION
Orienteering is a sport which requires using a map and navigating to various points or places on the map. It requires map reading and direction finding and a basic level of fitness. You can walk or run or go as a group. It comes in a variety of events from score(try and get as many points as you can in a limited time) or a course(navigate a set route given on a map as quickly as you can). Events are located at various spots from parks to bush reserves to state forests and other venues with suitable orienteering terrain.
ACTIVITIES OFFERED
Winter Park-O Series 2021:
Central Coast Orienteering invites you to four events spread over the winter months to help newcomers gain some orienteering skills and techniques which can be applied to bush and park orienteering.
Sunday morning at 9:30 for coaching and 10:00 for the course opening.
Events Format –
2 courses of approximately 2km and 4km. Coaching tips and training will be offered from 9:30 to 10:00 am and then participants can go and try the course of their choice.
1 – 9th May 2021: Hylton Moore Park East Gosford.
Coaching Focus – map symbols, colours, contours and interpretation. Using line features. Understanding control descriptions. Safety bearings, what to do if you are ‘lost’
2 – 6th June 2021: Mount Penang Kariong
Coaching Focus – orientating the map, keeping map to ground contact- thumbing the map. Following a track or path (handrails).
3: 4th July 2021 – EDSAAC Bateau Bay
Coaching Focus – using handrails for route choice; simple distance judgment, checking off features passed.
4: 1st August 2021- Kincumber Mountain Kincumber
Coaching Focus – using a compass; aiming off; orienteering without handrails and using catching features.
Cost: $10 adults $5 Juniors (20 and under) First timers free entry.
